Africa – 15th Sept 2008 – Day 14

We had a wonderful nights sleep, the bed is comfy as are the pillows. Breakfast here is between 7 and 9, depending on your morning activity, as there is not so much to do here. The breakfast was good, but very German, cheese, ham, eggs etc.

After breakfast we joined the walking safari with another couple. The walk quickly became steep as we climber towards the plateau. On the way we saw cacubara, they look like a very large guinea pig, but they are very agile and climb trees to reach the juicy leaves and fruits. Very entertaining.

We also came across a troupe of monkeys who were as interested in us as we were of them.

After an hour of walking through the arid landscape, and amazing natural rock sculptures, we came to the plateau edge. Wow, what a great view. We rested on the edge for half an hour enjoying the cooling breeze.

We then made our way back down to the valley floor, passing a recent trail left by a black mamba snake.

By the time we reached the valley floor, the temperature was through the roof. We walked back along a dusty road, hoping we would be home soon as the temperature continued to climb.

Once back at the lodge (which we renamed Coldizt), we sat in the garden trying to ignore all the flies. We soon noticed that they had spread animal dung all over the garden, no wonder there were so many flies!!

After a siesta, we went to the afternoon tea area where we met the German guide. He spoke quite good English but he mentioned (without prompting) that this lodge was very Germanic!

When the afternoon drive began, it became obvious that he did not want to speak any English, due to the fact that seven guests were German and only two English. He occasionally spoke a few words of English but that was it. It also became obvious that the other guests were only interested in seeing Rhino. So, the trip out was frantic. He would not stop to see any birds or other animals as they just wanted Rhino.

We found the Rhino, which seemed far too tame. They came right up to the Land Rover.

At sun downer time, we stopped for a drink. However, unlike every other lodge, we were not asked what we wanted to drink. The other guests seemed happy with beer or cider, so that was that. During the stop, another extremely tame ostrich joined us. He just stood with us all watching!

After the game drive was over (thank god), we dressed for dinner and headed down to the bar. We were dreading another evening meal, being ignored by the staff and most of the guests.

The evening was as bad as expected. Again the menu was only in German, the host only spoke German (even though she knew were did not speak the language). We ate a quickly as we could and then went back to our room.
We are very angry with the staff and our travel agent, Audly Travel, for sending us here. We hate this place and can not wait to leave.
