The sun was shining this morning, so we popped to the office to try and contact Brian to arrange some horse riding. However, we was not to be found. So we decided not to stay another night at Abel Tasman but to travel to our next port of call, Westport, on the west coast. We have seen a couple of activities we fancy in and around the area, including Jet Boating, Quad biking and White Water Rafting. We drove through some wonderful mountainous scenery on the N6, eventually stopping at a town called Murchison for a mid journey rest. We stopped off at the activity company we plan to use for our local activities, called Buller Adventure Tours (see: http://www.adventuretours.co.nz/) . They are still waiting to see if they have enough people for the White Water Rafting. Still we can do the Quad Biking and the Jet Boating. We will phone at 8pm tonight to see if it is on.
After a visit to the local tourist info office (all main visitor info offices are called iSite Centers, over the whole of NZ). The two ladies in the centre gave us lots to think about and pointed us in the right direction for a small local hike.
We took their advise and hikes an one and a half hour trail through forest, following a small river, up to a section of valley where one side had come away in a recent earthquake. Very impressive, if a little scary!

After the hike, we continued along the N6 to Westport. We checked into our bargain Motel (see: http://www.westportspamotel.co.nz/) found the local supermarket, bought things for tonight’s salad and jumped back in the car for a 40 minute journey to Punakaiki, where they have some weird coastal rock formations and impressive blow holes.
Unfortunately the clouds had rolled back in and we missed the high tide, so when we visited the blow holes, they were not blowing very much. Sill, they had some impressive views.
We drove back to the Motel, showered, ate dinner and watched some TV. At 8pm, we phoned the adventure people only to find out that the White Water Rafting is not running. We will do the Quad Biking instead.
