Travelling long distances is never much fun but the flights from London to Auckland via Singapore and Sydney were not too bad.
BA managed to put us right in the middle of the club cabin on the first leg of the journey and would have put us back in the same seats for the second leg. However, John managed to get the check in staff to swap us out for a window seat.
By the end of the last flight we were beginning to flag. We arrived at Auckland, picked up our bags and took the free bus to our car rental office. We had booked the cheapest possible car hire and boy did it show.
The Toyota was very old, had 176,000 miles on the clock, made a wining noise but had character. We drove into the centre of Auckland and found our hotel on the quay side area.
The Westin is a new hotel and very nice to boot. Our room has a harbour view and is light and airy. (See: www.westin.com/auckland) .
The weather was shooty shiny but dry. We fought the jet lag and walked around the trendy dock area, checking out the restaurants, bars and other activities. Earlier we had watched people throwing themselves off the side of the Auckland Tower in a kind of ab sailing event.
John was feeling very fatigued with the jet lag. We walked for about two hours and then headed back to the room for a bath and a snooze. First impressions of Auckland are favourable. Very English, very clean and trendy in places.
We ordered room service, watched a video and fell asleep.
